Introduction
How to switch from a Synology NAS DS213j to Synology NAS DS225+.
According to How do I migrate data between Synology NAS (DSM 6.0 and later) there are three methods to migrate data:
- Migration via Migration Assistant
- HDD migration
- Migration via Hyper Backup
For my specific setup, method 1 is ruled out, as my old model (DS213j) is not listed on the supported models of the Migration Assistant.
Method 2 may not be suitable, as the source and destination NAS have different architectures. Also, I still use ext4 on the old NAS and I want to move to bzrf.
Therefore, method 3 is the way to go.
Preparation
With method 3, I can only move data from one NAS to another. Therefore, I need to set up the new NAS completely from scratch (which is an advantage, I find).
Let’s identify all relevant packages:
- HyperBackup
- MariaDB
- WebServer
- PhotoStation
- TaskScheduler and custom scripts
- OpenVPN
- DSNote
- Synology Drive?
Backup
Since HDD prices are through the roof, and my old HDDs still work, I want to re-use the old HDDs. The old NAS uses RAID1/SHR ???, so there is no data loss when I remove one HDD. However, I need to save crucial data before (where?).
Everything synced with Synology Drive is already fine, as this is also saved on the personal laptops.
